What is an Overdenture?

Overdentures are removable dental prostheses that cover and rest on one or more remaining natural teeth. They can either be tooth-supported or implant-supported. An overdenture is a removable denture attached by the dentist to natural teeth or dental implants.

Overdentures are very useful for patients with dental-related conditions such as a cleft-palate, absence of more than six teeth in either primary or permanent teeth (oligodontia), and cleidocranial dysostosis (abnormal development of bones in the skull or clavicle area).
Overdentures are useful for patients whose upper or lower teeth are missing. Dental patients who have to undergo recurring dental repair or even multiple tooth loss ultimately prefer to use dentures.

When one loses teeth, their jawbone remodels and shrinks over time, causing an odd fit of dentures. Consequently, most dentists will want to avoid this by attaching overdentures to the patient’s remaining teeth or dental implants.

Over the years, there has been a lot of improvement in what we can term as traditional dentures. The modern dentures are better looking and more comfortable. Modern overdentures have been able to restore a good quality of life, usually lost at one’s teeth loss.
Dental patients using overdentures are usually more confident, and most have reported feeling a lot better about themselves. They prefer them as the dentures’ connection is more dependable compared to traditional denture adhesives.

Most of the patients using dentures can now comfortably eat more foods than those still using traditional dentures. Modern-day overdentures are an addition to one’s aesthetic value.

The best dentists in town have been using a hybrid method to replace the teeth. This method involves a combination of prosthetic dentures and dental implant technology, so their patients can enjoy a more ‘natural teeth’ feeling.

For patients with their teeth still present, no teeth extraction is required, making overdentures a good option. This also spares them the anxiety that comes with a tooth extraction procedure. Canine teeth mostly support these overdentures.

After a root canal treatment, the canines are connected with a metal bar or kept individually, having an attachment placed on them. This attachment fits into the base of the overdenture.

Most dentists may prefer to use two dental implants to support overdentures as it is more cost-effective.
Upper or lower dentures that are still in good condition may be converted to overdentures supported by dental implants. The dentist places implants in the area where the canines used to be. The implants can then be connected individually or with a metal bar, to fit into the overdenture.

Let us take a look at the advantages of using overdentures:

  • Overdentures offer absolute protection to teeth, with the help of daily stimulation to the jawbone. Unlike traditional dentures that sometimes led to jawbone loss and other aesthetic effects, overdentures are reliable and safe to use.
  • Overdentures allow patients to eat the foods they love. They are able to chew most of the food with little restriction.
  • Overdentures prevent bone loss, as is common with most traditional dentures users.
  • They improve the patients’ general quality of life. This includes restoring lost self-esteem and confidence. Most users have reported improved emotional, physical, and psychological well-being. Most patients with overdentures feel younger and more attractive.
  • Taking care of dentures is quite simple, which is an added advantage.
  • Overdentures don’t cover the palate, which leads to more comfort for the user.
  • The use of overdentures improves the general appearance of the user. For instance, the facial look is protected from loss of the jawbone, as tooth loss makes a face appear more sunken.
  • They no longer require adhesives to hold, making them super convenient for most patients.
  • Overdentures provide improved function and retention when compared to conventional dentures, as the latter may become unstable over time and require fitting.
  • Overdentures are made from acrylic. Acrylic is helpful in preserving the surrounding bone.

Patients with overdentures should maintain a thorough oral hygiene routine. They should remove the dentures at night and clean around all the attachments in the mouth.

Regular visits to the dentist are encouraged at all times. West Hollywood dentists advise that if you suspect a crack in your dentures, it is advised you consult a dentist as opposed to trying to repair it yourself, so as to not destroy them beyond repair. Daily brushing your dentures will help remove food particles and prevent dental plaque or getting stained.

Brushing your gum, tongue, and palate each morning before inserting dentures stimulates circulation in the tissues and enhances fresh breath. Best dentists in town advise placing your dentures in a denture cleanser soaking solution is very helpful for every time you’re not using your dentures. You could also use plain water, ensuring it is not hot, as this may cause your dentures to warp. Dried out dentures are fragile and may easily get damaged.
